Three wins from four for Swifts teams

Comag Matamata Swifts’ Soccer Shop WaiBOP Premiership campaign continues to move in the right direction after a second consecutive victory on Saturday. The Swifts eased home 4-1 at West Hamilton United with another performance that will help consign the team’s mid-season struggles to the “how the heck did that happen?” basket. Andrew Clothier, back in the side after a five week injury absence, struck early from the penalty spot before...

Swifts in seventh heaven

Comag Matamata Swifts released months of pent up footballing angst on Saturday, defeating Ngaruawahia United 7-2 at the Domain in their latest Soccer Shop WaiBOP Premiership match with the type of clinical finishing that had previously been absent all season. The talk leading up to the match was that, in recent games, Matamata had created more than enough but, for some reason, the goals just wouldn’t go in. While this match ultimately...

Weekend of woe for Swifts teams

After an abbreviated schedule a week ago, all Matamata Swifts’ senior teams were back in action this weekend and each ended their match with a similar tale of woe. Comag Matamata Swifts and Waharoa Transport Swifts reserves had an unhappy time of it over the hill. The Swifts lost 4-0 to WaiBOP Premiership leaders, Papamoa, while the reserves went down 4-1 to Papamoa’s reserves in the early game. The Swifts were down by three at the...

Usual ups and downs in another weekend of Swifts football

It was another case of what could have been for Comag Matamata Swifts on Saturday, as they went down 1-0 to WaiBOP Premiership title chasers, Waikato Unicol, after creating enough chances to have taken more from the match. Down to the bare bones, due to an injury list as long as Nile River, the Swifts were forced to sit in and look to counter their polished opponents. Unicol, as a result, had more of the ball but the Swifts were able...

Sun shines, but not on the Swifts

It was another relatively bleak weekend on the results front for Matamata Swifts’ senior football teams. Comag Matamata Swifts let in a late, late equaliser to secure a draw from a match they should have won comfortably, while the three other teams all tasted narrow defeats. Matamata Swifts’ Soccer Shop WaiBOP Premiership match against Tauranga Boys’ College FC was their season in microcosm. The visitors struck from a corner four and...

Goals but not much glory

The Matamata Domain was the place to be on Saturday if you wanted to see goals. Twenty one, in fact, flew into the back of the net in the three games involving the club’s men’s teams but they were all, unfortunately, in losing causes. Things didn’t get much better on Sunday as Challenge Matamata Swifts Ladies’ Waikato Division 1 title charge suffered a blip with a 2-1 defeat at Otorohanga. Saturday’s triple header saw Comag Matamata...

Swifts lose at leaders as other teams win big

Comag Matamata Swifts suffered a 3-1 defeat at Taupo, The Soccer Shop WaiBOP Premiership leaders, on Saturday but there were positive results for the club’s two other teams that were in action over the weekend. The match in Taupo was bright, open, highly competitive and packed with the usual amount of talking points that fans come to expect from encounters between these two sides. Both sides had a range of good chances, with Dwayne...

Swifts and Ladies eke out results as injuries bite

All four Swifts senior teams were back in action over the weekend, but the talk leading up to the latest set of games was about whether the club would have enough fit and available players to fulfil their scheduled fixtures. Thankfully the crisis, particularly prevalent across the men’s teams, eased just enough to allow the club to send teams to various parts of the Waikato. In a couple of cases, however, results were quite severe....

Long weekend short on football action

Only two Matamata Swifts football teams were in action over the long weekend and both suffered similarly frustrating results following performances that are becoming increasingly customary. Comag Matamata Swifts were held to a 0-0 draw by visiting Te Awamutu, one of the club’s traditional rivals, while Waharoa Transport Swifts Reserves again gave an opposing team a large head start before settling into their work. On the face of it a...
