The Swifts reserves have picked up their second win of the season with a gritty backs-to-the-wall performance over previously unbeaten Melville United.

Most of the goal scoring was early on with the reserves gaining a 2-1 lead inside the first 20 minutes. Goals from Marcelo Marquez and Matt Monteith gave the reserves something tangible to hold onto and they did that well for the remainder of the match.

The visitors had several golden chances to get something from the match, with Matt Aberhart getting across to make a point blank block during the first half before Melville scooped a chance over the cross bar when it would have been easier to score. Melville also missed a virtual open goal during the second half.

The reserves, however, held firm and mounted attacks of their own, with Ronan Costello and Scott Hudson pulling the strings. Costello was rewarded for his industry late on when he was put through and finished neatly to wrap the game up.

While the reserves rode their luck at times, they’ll feel it was about time they had something go their way after a couple of rough defeats on the road.
